the dream job or the dream life

Why is it that so many of us are unhappy with our working lives? Perhaps it's because we choose careers that will be financially rewarding, so that we may have a chance at a 'better' life. Sadly, it is only years down the track we realise our work should also create within us some sense of purpose, vision and individuality.

"The dreams we had of working for leading organisation or having a fancy job title, come crashing down when the day-to-day reality sets in. We work day and night, give up our precious time, our health, our happiness, our dreams, and passions - all for what? There has to be more to life ..."

Most of us have two options when faced with an unfulfilling career. We can accept our fate and go through our professional lives being miserable - dreaming of the day our boss is magically transferred! Or we can start making real changes: by re-examining our our life and make some adjustments. It may sound tough, but it's easier than spending the next 30 years being miseratble.

The reason so many of us are unhappy professionally, is not really our work - it is our lives. We have invested so much into our careers, that our life comes second. In reality, changing companies or careers will only offer a short-term solution. What most of us really need is some time for introspection; we need more than a business plan and resume ...
